On October 10, 2018 Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle. This Category 5 hurricane caused widespread and catastrophic damage along coastal urban centers and far inland in rural areas. The storm surge and winds leveled whole forests and communities. Property and lives were lost, and the long road of recovery began as soon as the historic storm passed. One of the resources harmed, but often left unaddressed until long after natural disasters occur, were cultural resources. One year after the storm, many of the historic buildings, museums, and archaeological sites damaged by Hurricane Michael are still trying to recover.
